The Golden Key Salon Series at the Bechstein Piano Centre aims to foster artistic development by bringing artists and audience together in an intimate setting for uplifting musical evenings. Held on the first Thursday of the month from October to May, the Salon Series features new and distinguished artists, premiere performances, and post-concert “meet the artists” wine receptions. The concerts are presented in partnership with the Golden Key Music Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging and educating musicians to perform with ease and communicative power.

September 11th Concert

John McDowell and Emmanuel Vukovich will perform in conjunction with the September Concert, a fantastic organization that produces and promotes musical events for peace all over NYC and the world on September 11th.
The performance, at South Oxford Space in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, is free but is recommended that you order your free tickets in advance. This concert is being held under the auspices of American Opera Projects’ Helping Hands program. Directions to the space are here.
The show has the theme/title: “Home Grown: a Harvest of Fresh Music for Peace.” It includes performances of mostly original music by Brooklyn- and New York City area-based classical and jazz musicians and also features fresh organic produce from local farms.

Rockland Farm Alliance Benefit

A Music for Farms Benefit Concert for the Rockland Farm Alliance will be held on Sunday September 13th at 3 PM at the Threefold Auditorium, 260 Hungry Hollow Road, Chestnut Ridge, NY. A reception following at 4:30 PM will feature locally grown treats. Tickets are $17 Adults and $12 for students in advance and $15 and $20 at the door (please visit www.rocklandfarm.org to order tickets); The performers are musicians, composers and farmers John McDowell (piano and percussion) and Emmanuel Vukovich (violin), performing an original composition based on the Parsifal legend as well as classical and tango pieces. McDowell is best known as composer of the score to Oscar winning documentary Born Into Brothels and has toured with Rusted Root. Juilliard-educated Vukovich is a former member of the Lloyd Carr-Harris String Quartet, first place winner in the prestigious Fischoff Competition.
Come support The Rockland Farm Alliance (RFA), a broad based community coalition of farmers, community groups, community activists, local and county officials and interested citizens. The RFA was formed in early 2007, with a simple mission to preserve, create and enhance sustainable agriculture in Rockland County, NY. This grassroots effort, which started with the passionate vision of a single farmer, has grown into a powerful community force of over 400 members. With nearly every facet of our community represented, they draw on the expertise of individual members from every walk of life. Several exciting initiatives will be announced at the reception.

Emmanuel Vukovich and John McDowell in Concert: An intimate evening of music

As a tie-in to the Toronto International Film Festival’s premiere of documentary film Stolen, this unique concert featuring musicians, composers, and farmers John McDowell (piano and African drums), and Emmanuel Vukovich (violin and African drums) will be held at Toronto’s Heliconian Club, 35 Hazelton Avenue, on Friday, September 18 at 8pm. Reception to follow concert at 9:30pm.
Both musicians have collaborated on the sound track to the film Stolen which is premiering at this year’s TIFF.
The duo will weave an evening of music inspired by a firm belief in the re-connecting of opposites – such as in their original work based on the Parcifal legend, the meeting of Eastern and Western classical music in their own transcription of Ravi Shankar and Yehudi Menuhin’s Swara Kakali, in their personal backgrounds of jazz and classical music, and finally in their own lives of practicing music and farming side by side.
Program will include:
- Parcifal by Emmanuel Vukovich and John McDowell
- Swara Kakali by Ravi Shankar and Yehudi Menuin – arranged by Vukovich/McDowell
- Beethoven Sonata, Op. 8, second movement
- Argentinian Tango pieces – arranged by McDowell/Vukovich
- F Major by John McDowell -Black Orpheus – arranged by McDowell/Vukovich
- Selections from Bach’s Solo Violin Sonatas and Partitas
- Selections from film scores by John McDowell
The performers will also share some of their experience as farmers and present an excerpt from a film about music and farming entitled Bach in a Barn. Violinist Vukovich states “Originally, music, dance, and artistic culture in general were strongly inter-connected to, and a part of, our human civilization’s relationship to nature. This was expressed in traditional agrarian society through rituals in rhythm with the seasons – such as harvest festivals. As people have migrated more and more to large urban centres, artistic cultural life has tended to separate from agricultural life. We go to concerts in the city, and we get our food from farms in the country. This has often created a void and famine of culture and arts in rural farming communities, and a corresponding disconnect/abstraction in the arts.” To this end, the proceeds from this event will go towards the creation of a foundation which works to connect world-class music-making and artistic culture with local sustainable agriculture and farming communities.

Tibetan Home of Hope Fundraiser
John will be appearing with Krishna Das at the Tibetan Home of Hope fundraising benefit at the Nyack Center, in Nyack, NY on March 7th. VIP admission is at 4:00, food and beverages included. General admission ($30) is from 5:00 to 8:00pm.
